The Division 1 North Nottingham Vipers started their season, as an entirely new team, against Grimsby Wolves on Saturday 5th October.
After some evenly matched early exchanges, Laura Hammond broke the deadlock for Vipers with a goal at 5’ assisted by Chloe Haywood.
A great start to the new era got even better when Katie Ferguson was put through by Lara Meldrum for a 2-0 score line at the 12’ mark. This would last through to the end of the first period and things were looking good.
Period 2 could not have been foreseen!
Caitlin Woolley had a fantastic Vipers debut, but there was nothing she could do as the Wolves put six unanswered goals into the Vipers’ net and reversed the momentum completely.
Ketz Robinson, completed an outstanding performance for Grimsby by netting her hat-trick goal in P3, whilst on a short-handed breakaway.
And so, the game finished 7-2 in favour of Grimsby, but there were certainly plenty of positives for the new Vipers outfit. The shots count was much closer than the final score suggests.
Coach Keal will no doubt want to work on keeping defensive duties consistent throughout the game, with Period 2, when goalie Woolley was frequently left ‘home alone’, proving to be the difference on the day.
