Widnes Wild cause major scare for the Leaders

Vipers trip to Widnes Wild on Sunday 20th January saw some big early difficulties for Vipers before they eventually ran out with a 9-3 win in front of a large and loud crowd.

A Vipers’ goal after 15 seconds by the League’s leading point scorer, Robin Mullen, pointed to a possible runaway win. How wrong this proved to be!

Mistakes in the Vipers defense were dealt with swiftly by clinical Widnes finishing. This had them leading 2-1 at the end of P1. (Goals from Savannah Sumner and Captain, Emma Pearson).

Although Vipers were creating the majority of chances, they were not able to fire on all cylinders; Stephanie Drinkwater in the Widnes net was on top form, stonewalling all efforts.

Goal number two for the Vipers took until the 33rd minute to arrive with another fine finish from Robin Mullen.

The team settled and the combination of Robin Mullen and Madison Wright burst into life for a goal each within a  two minutes spell.

The excitement proved a little too much for young Miss Wright, who shortly afterwards seemed to forget she was in Womens’ Hockey and threw a ferocious check that landed her a 2+10 minute penalty for elbows, and a long rest in the box.

Nevertheless, Vipers continued to lead 4-2 at the second interval.

The stubborn Wild again came out with real spirit and a continuing determination to cause an upset. A goal from Danielle Skilander made it 4-3 at the 45 minute mark and Nottingham nerves were again jangling.

No Vipers game these days is complete without points from Jessica Urquhart and she choose exactly the right time to receive a pass from Renata Mudrakova and sweep hard at the net from square on. Two goal lead restored!

Thankfully for Vipers, the Wilds’ incredible earlier efforts took their toll in the final 10 minutes and the Snakes were able to capitalise on tiredness with two more goals from Robin Mullen, one from Renata Mudrakova and a second for Madison Wright.

The Vipers may have taken the points from this one, but the moral victory really belonged to Widnes.
